The Nation's Largest Employer

Over the next two years, the federal government -- the nation's largest employer -- is projected to hire nearly 193,000 new employees to fill "mission critical" government jobs in almost every occupational field, according to an new report from the non-profit Partnership for Public Service. Driving the rush are the impending retirement and resignation of nearly one-third of the 1.6 million current federal workers, along with stepped-up efforts to secure the U.S. against terrorism and illegal immigration. The Departments of Defense and Homeland Security alone are expected to offer more than 83,000 new jobs. About 80% of the new hires will be in five professional fields:

Security, Protection, compliance and enforcement

Medical and Public Health

Accounting, budget and business

Engineering and Sciences

Program Management/Analysis and Administration

The Partnership for Public Service contends that government is changing the way it does business and is now promoting more dynamic work environments. To reward and encourage high performers, many federal employees will soon have their pay tied more closely to their performance. In order to attract new talent in these jobs, agencies also offer student loan repayments, signing bonuses and flexible work schedules.

Federal job opportunities exist around the country and around the world. In fact, 85 percent of federal employees work outside the greater metropolitan Washington, D.C. area, and more than 50,000 work overseas.

Data from 2007 shows employee satisfaction increased (from 2005) in 41 percent of all federal organizations. The highest scoring workplace categories were found to be, in order-- employee skills/mission match, teamwork, pay and benefits, and work/life balance.

A caution to interested parties- although some research presented here is dated 2007, the About.com projections were taken from 2009.
