Portsmouth, Ohio -- "The city where Southern hospitality begins." Remember this slogan for our once-revered home? Some of you young people do not, I am sure, and for good reason. For many years now, the sleepy little Appalachian town of 21,000 inhabitants has been a hotbed of alleged political misconduct and criminal schemes amid public unrest. Young people, you may have the unfortunate opportunity to view your hometown at its worst.
In a new report from the Portsmouth Daily Times (Frank Lewis, "Mayor Says Council May Ask Her To Pay For Renovations, or Resign," February 20 2010), Mayor Jane Murray claims she has been frustrated while working on the city's financial issues and on a request by City Council to pay for the renovations to her own office. She also believes that if she does not resign, members of Council are going to actively work to have her recalled.
Murray said she believes the public knows, “this city has been run by a handful of people for the last 50 years.” She goes on to explain that the public is tired of the "handful of people" and they have a right to be "infuriated at these political games."
At Issue
Since nothing could seem to worsen the lines of communication at city hall, I would make all public servants complete a small homework assignment to be completed and published in the Daily Times.
1. The Integrity of City Government
a. Have the mayor name the alleged "handful of people" bent on control of the city.
b. Have the mayor tell in exact detail what they are trying to control and by what means they are doing it.
2. The Climate for Change
a. Have each City Council member and the Mayor identify the #1 budget concern in Portsmouth.
b. Require each City Council member and the Mayor to offer the single best solution for accomplishing the #1 budget concern in Portsmouth.
3. The Personalities of Elected Officials
a. Require each City Council member and the Mayor to name the #1 impediment to getting along and to working together.
b. Require each City Council member and the Mayor to identify the means of removing the #1 impediment to getting along and to working together.
4. The State of the City
a. Have each City Council member and the Mayor identify the #1 reason for the alleged deplorable state of the city.
b. Have each City Council member and the Mayor write a brief plan for improving the #1 reason for the deplorable state of the city.
5. Common Sense
a. Have each City Council member and the Mayor identify (in specific terms) one new, needed, positive step to be made in a short time that everyone in the government can agree to and accomplish.
b. Implement the best of the new, needed, positive steps with foresight, cooperation and amendment.
Why Are People Disgusted?
The people of Portsmouth have spoken their will time and time again. They have become accustomed to falsehoods, rants, and threats from within their city chambers. They realize the tremendous work it will take to improve their city within the budget and with the cooperation of dedicated, committed officials. The task is tremendous. But, does city government wish to confirm the work as an impossibility?
Portsmouth City Council has become the model for the non-working assemblage of individuals dedicated to disagreement. To each faction in charge, I would remind you that you represent the total population, not just your individual or group interest. Take into account the negativity generated by your petty arguments and the wasted time spent in delaying progress because of your own personal shortcomings.
As our town stagnates with see-saw decisions and rank discontent, we continue to lose the benefits of any present satisfying existence. No one of our officials should represent special interests in conflict with the general public good. For those who stand in the way, it is time to get together, get to work, or get out if you do not want to represent those trying to contribute to the solution.
It's a shame, really!! I didn't realize the city had dwindled to only 21K folks. The last I remembered it was near 50K. The good folks of Portsmouth requires leadership with unquestionable character and impeccable integrity. This sleepy little town can offer a lot to a host of manufactures looking for a place to locate a business that is tax friendly and with a willing, educated and under-worked workforce. You can't tell me, with the "Right/Correct" leadership, we can't entice major corporations to locate in our corner of the universe.
ReplyDeleteHave we been held back for so long that we are numb to any positive change/influences? Are we so depressed we are no longer able to function as a people? Are we really satisfied with the status quo and are unwilling to realize our potential.
My goodness folks, let us all wake up and demand the absolute best of our elected officals. It is our "RIGHT" and "OBLIGATION" to demand change for our future, if not for our sake, certainly for our children and for the generations to come.
Stop the madness! Stop the bellyaching! We are at fault, not the elected! We have allowed them to control our lives for decades! It will only change when "We The People" DEMAND CHANGE!
GET OUT OF THE DEPRESSED STATE WE ARE IN, PORTSMOUTH! OPEN THE CURTAINS and LET THE SUN SHINE IN! TAKE CHARGE OF YOUR FUTURE! DEMAND EXCELLENCE IN OUR CITY LEADERS! HOLD THEM ACCOUNTABLE FOR NOT ACTING! TAKE CHANCES!! LIVE FREE AND WATCH THE AREA PROSPER! YOU ARE IN CHARGE! NOT THE ELECTED, LIKE THEY WANT YOU TO BELIEVE!!
Good afternoon!
ReplyDeleteI am originally from Ohio (Hocking Hills area)- my fiancee is from Egypt (Cairo area- city girl!). We currently reside in Nashville Tn, but are looking to move back to Ohio soon, and we are very interested in Portsmouth, and looking to establish our roots, and leave our legacy there. It seems like a city in a good "north meets south" area, brimming with potential because of its central location. We are both energetic, creative thinking "30 somethings" excited to make a difference in our community. I am an artistic, creative thinking, big-picture kind of guy with an extensive background in sales, manufacturing efficiency improvement, team building, and fund raising. I am also a proud graduate of the 2006/2007 Fairfield County (Ohio) Chamber of Commerce Leadership course. She (my fiancee) also is an artistic, creative thinker, with a degree in Illustration Art from the University of Cairo, has an extensive background in sales, the hotel industry, personal banking, and has a Loan Officer License. Let the people who are "in the know" there that we are coming, and are looking for job opportunities and a home as well! We are anxious to relocate, and hope to be residents along the Ohio River soon! Where should we send our resumes? sparmi5@aol.com
Thanks,
Mike Sparks &

Resumes? For what? There are no jobs. Portsmouth is a cesspool of corruption, drugs, and welfare. We left for Tennessee as well. Why would you want to go back to a taxed up the rump state like Ohio? The grass is not greener there.
ReplyDeleteWOW people see things differently when they have blinders on. I left Portsmouth OH approximately 25 years ago. At that time there was a lot of potential for the area and it was growing especially Wheelersburg. I recently moved back and yes did obtain a good job with a good company, however I will agree that there are not many jobs here. It is a beautiful place the river is cleaner than it ever has been. We THE PEOPLE need to change it. My questions are why arent our elected officials out trying to entice corporations, manufacturing companies, hotel chains etc. into bringing their business into the area. We need to promote the river and do like other cities have done and make the river bring in business for them. Years ago we had the boat races, we lost them WHY? Who/when/what has been done to get them back? Did anyone lobby to have a casino here NO, WHY? It was said we didnt want to promote gambling that is a joke - this city is full of drugs and prostitutes that needs to be cleaned up. Why would we worry about gambling instead of thinking about the tourism and money it could bring to the area. There is a lot of potential for Scioto County but it is commonly known as a depressed area with beautiful scenery. I have no regrets about moving back but I do want to know and understand why nothing is being done about it. From where I stand it seems to me that there are people that want it to stay the way it is, this is our children, grandchildren and their childrens future it is up to us to change it now otherwise it will continue to become a lost city
ReplyDeleteThere is so much potential for business/retail in Portsmouth, because people must drive at least 45 minutes to the closest mall. Corporations should tap into this potential and start building. The college is growing in enrollement every year, and the hospital is still expanding.
